In many ways, making room for Jesus is even harder today than it was for Bethlehem’s innkeeper long ago. Especially during the holidays, we fill our schedules with so many good things, time with the people we love and enjoy most, and the obligations of the season. As a result, we can end up missing the very best thing—time with Jesus, the one who loves us the very most.
This December, we invite you to engage in a simple, meaningful prayer time that takes just a few minutes a day but will help you tune into what really matters during this season. It’s based on an ancient practice called the Prayer of Examen which is still meant for us today.
How it works:
Making room for Jesus begins with a simple prayer of invitation—turning toward God, asking for his perspective, and opening your heart to receiving his input.
Jesus, you are with me wherever I go.
Together let’s look at my life.
Help me see all through your loving eyes.
Next, reflect on a pair of questions for yourself, then ask and listen for God’s perspective on that theme. Consider these questions as we move through the holiday season:
Week of December 4-10
When did I feel closest to God today?
When did I feel farthest from Him?
God, where am I leaving you out of my life? How do I make room for you there?
Week of December 11–17
When was I proud of myself today?
Where in my life am I struggling with self-doubt, shame, or self-rejection?
Father, who do you say that I am?
Week of December 18–24
When did I say yes to God today through obedience of some kind?
When did I say no to God either by what I chose to do or left undone?
Lord, where do I need your forgiveness? And as you wash away my sin, what are you inviting me to instead?
Week of December 24–31
Where am I in charge of my own life?
Am I ready and willing to let Jesus lead my life?
Lord, would you forgive me and accept me as your adopted child into your forever family?
Week of January 1–7
How did I bless someone today whether small or big, on purpose or unintentionally?
Where did I have the chance to bless someone today and neglect to do so?
Holy Spirit, what do I have to offer those around me? What is one small thing I can
do this week?
