Memorizing Scripture is a spiritual practice that helps us keep God’s Word with us always, in our hearts and minds, so that we can be encouraged and challenged wherever we go. When you memorize scripture, the Holy Spirit can call it to mind, assuring you that God knew you would face each of these seasons of life, that he is with you, and that he wants to help you find purpose in every situation.
But, memorizing Scripture can be challenging! Here are four simple ways we’ve found to make it easier.
- Take it with you: Sometimes the best thing you can do is to keep the Scripture with you as you go through your day! Carry your bookmark, or write out a verse on a page of a spiral note card booklet and put it in your purse, or car, so you can look at it often. You can do the same with the Notes App in your phone if you prefer!
- Lockscreen: Write the verse out in your Notes app, take a screenshot, and then make that your wallpaper background, so that it’s always the first thing you see when you pick up your phone.
- Put it to Music: Try singing it! Even if it’s only for yourself, it’s easier for our brains to remember the things that are put to a melody - so make the verse a song and sing it all the time!
- Erase One Word at a Time: Grab a dry erase marker and write a verse on a whiteboard or a mirror that you see regularly. Read the verse over and over again out loud.. When you’re familiar with it, erase a word or two. Say the verse again, seeing if you can get through it and remember the missing words. Continue doing this until you’ve erased all the words from the full verse and have learned the whole thing.
